Malaysian Girl
I based this painting on a photo taken of a girl outside a church in Melaka, Malaysia. Melaka is one of the most multi-cultural towns I have seen and each street there seems to have a church, buddhist shrine, mosque and a synagogue! It was a great place to visit and hopefully we will get to go back there some day. From the photo, I changed the colours of the girls cloak and the sash to make the painting more striking. I also changed the colour of the backgound to match better with the colours of the girls clothes.

Mountains and Aspens
This painting was completed quite quickly at home and was taken from another painting of the Rocky Mountains in the US. It was a nice image to paint because of the vivid colours and I really liked the autumnal colours of the leaves compared with the cool blue of the mountain range behind. I am pleased with the painting and thought I captured quite well the mountains and sky behind the trees. Painting with acrylics is really quite straightforward as the paint dries so quickly that you can easily correct mistakes and you can progress with your painting at a fast rate. I am now planning to try my hand at oil painting which I expect will be more challenging!

Photos from Asia!
I travel to Asia every year and love to take photos of the fantastic scenery and street life from each country I visit. In recent years I have visted India, Burma, Malaysia and Vietnam amongst many other Asian countries. I particularly like to take photos of the people that I meet on each journey and I now have a quite comprehensive collection of images. I hope to publish the best of these images here on my blog. On the left is one of my favourite pictures taken of a young boy selling bananas at a market in old Dhaka, Bangladesh. My wife and I had a great time strolling around the narrow alleyways of the market and I was able to capture some images of the people going about their daily business. Below are a couple more images from Dhaka. A city I would recommend!
By Lamplight - John Singer Sargent
Having had some time to sit down and paint during the Christmas break I was happy to complete my copy of this painting by John Singer Sargent, By Lamplight. I always liked the painting and really enjoyed capturing the bright colours of the lamps and the flowers from the original. I was also inspired to paint this by visiting the recent exhibition of impressionist painting at the Caixa Forum here in Barcelona! The most difficult part of the painting were the girls faces!
